Topic: Tips & Tricks / Fixing French Characters in CSV Exports

I had to put together this step-by-step for my team, so I thought I’d share. This is the only conversion process (yes, it’s killer) I could figure out that preserves the formatting of the data after being converted. If anyone has found a better way, please share.

Our corporate environment runs Windows 2000 w/ Office 2003.

Work Instructions for Fixing Accents in Highrise Exports

1. Go to Highrise, click export contacts, and select “Export to Excel”.

2. Once you receive the export by email, save the contacts file to your desktop.

3. Locate the file on your desktop, right click it, and select open with… select Microsoft Office Excel.

4. In Excel, go to File > Save As…

5. When saving, change the format to “Text (Tab delimited)” and Save.

6. A message about formatting will pop-up, click Yes, then close Excel and another message will pop-up, click No.

7. Locate the file on your desktop, right click it, and select open with… select Notepad.

8. In Notepad, go to File > Save As…

9. When saving, change the encoding to ANSI and the filename to “contacts_YYYYMMDD” and Save.

10. Locate the file on your desktop, right click it, and select open with… select Microsoft Office Excel.

11. Delete the other two contacts files on your desktop.

12. Done!

Topic: Tips & Tricks / Adding Tags to CSV Export

Richard Haven: just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to respond to my post by telling me that your software includes tags. I know it does, but I’d prefer not to go 3rd party route at this point. Thanks.

37s: I just wanted to flag this CSV export sans tags as an issue again. Christmas card mailings are fast approaching and we need tags included in the CSV export to efficiently slice-and-dice the mailing list before we do the mail merge (i.e., to create mailing labels). Also, the need to do the ANSI > UTF-8 encoding conversion to fix accented characters is super annoying. Perhaps you could get these changes in for us as an early Christmas present? ;-)

Topic: Feature Requests / Inherit Company address

Jason – this is exactly the issue for us. We need to maintain addresses at the contact level so that when we do a CSV export, the contacts have mailing addresses (so that we can do a mail merge and send them Christmas cards!). Thanks, Chris.

I have never figured out how to get the Highrise RSS feeds to work. I can’t seem to figure out how the authentication piece works.

I agree with your comment re the help language around not supporting ‘generic csv import’. I also found this a bit confusing.

+1 for including tags as additional columns in CSV exports. But what to do with controlling the number of CSV columns for accounts with huge number of tags?

Topic: Tips & Tricks / Exporting contact history

Robert HR,

What do you mean by “contact history”? What kind of information are you referring to? Just trying to understand the information that’s available ‘under the hood’ (without having the ability to use the API – not a programmer).

Thanks.

+1 for an option within a contact’s profile to use company address. Double-entering the same mailing address (company and then contact) is just brutal for us. Thanks.

Topic: Feature Requests / Good way to identify people who haven't be touched in 30 days

Richard,

Great question. For me, “untouched” is really a measure of the number of days since a person’s/company’s contact information was reviewed and verified as current.

There are folks that we only contact once a year by mail/email. It is therefore very easy for it to be over two to three years before a person’s address/existence is re-validated. If we had some sort of a ‘validated’ flag that could be set on the day the information is validated then countdown for X days before becoming ‘unvalidated’ again.

This way we could slowly but surely be constantly working away at validating our contacts’ information throughout the year, w/o some sort of painful batch/bulk contact review exercise that is horribly inefficient and invariably produces lower quality results.

My $0.02.

Best,
Chris.

Contact decay (i.e., untouched in X days) would be a great addition.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Problems with uploading files to notes

Jason,

Let me transfer your call to our IT department. ;-)

I work for a company that’s 6000 strong and we have an IT infrastructure to match. While I take your point, there’s nothing I can do to upgrade my team’s “standard corporate build.”

Question for you: I have been running my team’s projects in basecamp for several years now, and we can upload files with our version of internet exploder no problem. Why can’t we upload files using same into highrise?

If you can help, and if this helps, I also experienced the same issue uploading an avatar just a moment ago. I will email the link flow and error message into support.

Thanks for your consideration.

Cheers,
Chris.

I am experiencing this file upload issue as well. Cannot upload attachments on save. Just goes to a network connection error page or saves properly but drops the attachment.

OS: Win2K
Browser: IE 6.0.2800.1106CO.

+ 1, but suggest a different implementation: ensure tags are included in the printed version of contacts (when elegant printer styles are added for this section). This would meet my needs.
