Topic: Better file management

Yep – this is proving to be an issue for us too… I’d love some way to do bulk deletion, if nothing else.

You know how it goes – the project goes live and suddenly the 10 TIFF images you needed three months ago now backed up locally are just not required anymore… but to click through and work on files ONE by ONE just seems primordial compared to some of the other excellent features on Basecamp.

I’m all for the checkbox route – nothing flash – just don’t need that. Drag and drop is a bit OTT… I’m just thinking along the lines of the Wordpress admin system.

Agree with rodm67 that ARCHIVED projects are the main culprit here. Would there be any possibility to add an option, when archiving, to do a “sparse archive” where all files can be deleted, but text-based content remains? I find that most of the time, if I have to access an archived project, its to get details of something or to check what someone said in a comment thread.

I´m having some problems with file management too.

I would love to have some easier way to delete files from archived projects.

It would be nice to be able to move files into categories much more quickly. I’ve noticed that the drag/drop in a few areas of basecamp is laggy, so I wouldn’t suggest that route, but maybe allowing us to quickly see 50 files at a time along with checkboxes, then at the top or bottom have a “with selected [select box of possible actions]” that we can use to move/delete big chunks of files at a time.

Given that Basecamp uses Amazon File management and if you look at amazon simple file management there are a number of GUI file managers for Amazon, maybe a GUI file manager could be made available to Basecamp. Now that Office Live from Microsoft has moved into beta, there is going to be more competition in this area. As tg22 says, it would be silly to have 2 systems so maybe 37S can surprise us again this year with something really useful (like email replies) :)

I would agree with the above – we use Share File and like it and just reviewing Base Camp – we have our clients access Share File and it works well – I can see the advantages of using Base Camp – but unless we can upload entire File Folders – that would leave us to using Share File and Base Camp – and that wouldn’t make sense. We don’t do ‘Projects’ like everyone else – we have Accounts – or more like Account Management – and hence we have an entire Account under a Project and have sub folders – To Do’s, etc under that Project. I like the file structure and ease of use though…

Topic: Amazon S3 down or broken?

Ohhh indeed. LOL.

Ms. Hatter; any feedback? Seriously, please consider this a paid for option. FTP was taken away very suddenly. Had we known, then we would have activated it at the beginning too!

Maybe I should post a request up for somebody to sell me a Basecamp account with FTP enabled…. from pre-amazon days…when the light was bright and the spirit was free.

@chrismear, FTP uploading is no longer offered on new accounts. If you never set up FTP uploading for your account, Basecamp storage is the only option you have for file uploading.

The ‘host your own files on FTP’ still is and always has been an option.

Just go to your account’s Settings page, and click on File Upload Settings, and choose the FTP/SFTP option.

Can’t agree enough with GLawrie.

Not only does FTP give us a failsafe back up but there’s also a performance gain (our FTP box sits in our network) and with large files this can be a big plus. On one of our design projects, we have placed a restriction on sharing files above 10Mb.
Security is another issue. It’s not a massive issue right now, but is concern that our CIO raises time to time. At this point convenience trumps the pain, but the balance will shift the other way over time.

Appreciate your needs to make a business return so why not make this a chargeable option. $100/annum to enable FTP option for those that choose to use it. You save on storage and bandwidth, make money, and customers are happy all round.

Just a thought – but one thing you could do to protect against this type of ‘utility failure’ would be to allow people to go back to using their own FTP servers… at any point some of these might go down, but you eliminate the ‘common mode’ failure that brings down the whole pack of cards.

richallum is correct. S3 appears to be back and files seem accessible again. There may still be some intermittent issues, though. We’ll take this moment to reflect on how we can better shield ourselves at least partially from utility failures like this in the future. Thanks for your patience through this!

We know losing access to any part of the products is a major inconvenience and that you in essence could care less who’s ultimately to blame or why it happens.

richallum: Backpack has not yet migrated to S3. Those files are still kept on our servers. It has much, much less data than Basecamp.

raeckel: Correct. That is the same issue.

BTW, I just want to reiterate that what S3 is currently having problems with is the access to the files hosted there. Not the files themselves.

And we know this sucks! Amazon S3 is a utility service that’s not supposed to go down. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more details.

HI Sarah,

Basecamp uses a service called S3 by Amazon to host the files you upload.

Where are Backpack files kept?

This doesn’t have anything to do with our online status, Simen. Basecamp is functional, the only thing affected right now is the Files section and unfortunately we have no control over the resolution of this problem.

Basecamp uses a service called S3 by Amazon to host the files you upload. At about 7:30am CST their service experienced an outage that is affecting Basecamp as well as thousands of other companies that rely on the S3 service to host files. Amazon’s IT staff is looking into the issue and “is working as quickly as possible to restore performance.” We’ll post updates when we have them. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We’re aware of the issue. It appears that Amazon’s S3 service is experiencing some widespread problems this morning. Amazon is working on the issue, but they don’t have an ETA at this point. We’re watching the situation closely and we’ll let you know as soon as we know anything further.

Any workaround how to download files before it’s fixed? Or do we just have to wait to get to all our files?

Same trouble here…how long does it usually take to fix problems like this…this is the first I have seen since joining back in September 2007.

They are normally pretty quick but what’s the time in Chicago?

Files are working fine in Backpack though so might not be a problem with Amazon.
