Topic: Feature Requests / Basecamp Backup system?

As there seems to be a bunch of systems that interface with basecamp, i’m wondering if there is some backup / restore system out there.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks Jason. I’m impressed at the quick response. You have restored my faith in basecamp :)

it’s offical, my clients just posted a message in my basecamp asking me if I can change their user preferances so that they can see who the email is coming from. Now even my clients are noticing it!

i hate the feeling i’m getting. I remember this same thing happened back when you made the change to the overview screen. And eventually you made all the changes we gave you feedback about. But before you did, you talked up and down about how the “new” version (minus the changes) was so much better.

Why not learn from history? If we are giving you feedback, take it and make the changes. But instead it’s just “one vector” you’ll use in your choices. The other vector being what you like best.

Read your own book, “less is more” there is no way putting the project history of the last few days on every single email is “less”.. it’s much “more” and really out of line with what i expect from you guys.

just once, JUST ONCE.. can you admit you made a mistake and undo it? It seems to me like this is all an ego thing, and you just can’t admit when you make a mistake.

agreed. I just posed the same request over in the bugs forum.

Is there way to make them not display? Pretty much everyone in my system doesn’t use a display picture, so we end up with a column of the default grey person profile cluttering up the screen.

I don’t like the new LATEST PROJECT UPDATES in the email. It’s just too much. I can get the latest updates on the web under the overview screen where I like them.

I agree that the LATEST PROJECT UPDATES is a heck of a lot of unwanted noise in the email. If this is something that is going to stay can we at least have the ability to turn it off? Have it a user settings.?

And here I thought 37s went with the “less is more” approach.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / basecamp offline lastnight?

What happened? the entire system was offline for about 30 min, then slowly came back up. Last time there was down time there was a post about it.

This time there was downtime and it seem like they are hoping we didn’t notice.

Anyone else notice this last night? Around midnight EST to 12:45am EST?

Topic: System Announcements / NEW FEATURE: "List view" for messages

Did some investigation and it appears that this forum is NOT just using the css:visited and the browser history to present us with the grey or green icon. It’s actually remembering what we clicked. Here’s my evidence.

1. Cleared my browser cache COMPLETELY and this forum still remembers what i read. 2. Check out the code of this forums icons vs. the basecamp list view code:

this forum

<img alt="Comment" class="icon grey " src="/images/clearbits/comment.gif?1179196090" title="No recent activity" />

basecamp list view

<span class="icon">&nbsp;</span>

See the difference. The forum actually has a class called “icon” and “grey” .. so the css is not just switching it being visited. The software is remembering and storing that i read it. If it’s green you’dd see “icon green”. etc..

Basecamp is just using a :visited. in css to change.

So there goes the argument that it just can’t be done. It’s being done just fine right here in this forum.

just to let you know. We haven’t forgot about how half assed the new overview page looks. Per my prediction you are just going to ignore us and say “we like it. End of story”.

Half, not half assed right from your own book:

Throw in every decent idea that comes along and you’ll just wind up with a half-assed version of your product. What you really want to do is build half a product that kicks ass.

Beware, you now have 2 screens of your product that are just that. Half assed. They don’t “kick-ass” like you say they should. You are admiting yourself there are flaws. By definition that is not “kick ass”

Most software surveys and research questions are centered around what people want in a product. “What feature do you think is missing?” “If you could add just one thing, what would it be?” “What would make this product more useful for you?” What about the other side of the coin? Why not ask people what they don’t want? “If you could remove one feature, what would it be?” “What don’t you use?” “What gets in your way the most?” More isn’t the answer. Sometimes the biggest favor you can do for customers is to leave something out.

We are telling you now. We don’t want these broken green icons. Are you going to listen to us?

Design the interface before you start programming

Can you REALLY honestly say you designed the new overview screen like it is, then started programming? I don’t think you can.

Ok that’s enought for now, i’m just trying to illustrate how 37s is going off course. Everything you say in your book, you mean, and you should stick to. The problem is when you have an attitude that you can do no wrong, and a good number of your customers are “fanboys”, when you do get off course you won’t even know you are.

You are just a little of course. You can get back on easily. Just have to admit your mistakes and move on. (that’s another chapter too admitting you made a mistake)

Topic: System Announcements / NEW FEATURE: "List view" for messages

If you clear your browser history, or your history fills up and your browser deletes the history, the messages will “reset” just like visited links your browser will reset to new links.

The link/vlink system isn’t perfect, but storing a flag per user-per message-per comment would result in a massive data explosion that we’re not optimized for at this time. Maybe one day, but with over a million users and millions of messages and comments, we’d be talking about a huge database expansion for just one tiny feature.

So for now it’s link/vlink. We think there’s plenty of value in the current implementation. We hope you like it as much as we do. We’re really digging list view ;) bq.

Ok i see now i guess i was asking a question that was already answered. So this is really just a CSS based ”:visited” style then right? Has nothign to do with anything.

Question, is that how this message board works too. I don’t want to clear my cache to try it. If not then it can handle those hits.

I would vote for just losing the icons cause i’m just gonna see green all the time kinda annoying..

BUT it’s still useful to see just the titles of message for me. Easier to scan the whole screen for something I’m looking for. But the green icons are giving me no useful information right now.

but i’d rather not have the green things at all then. They are districting for me, and i probably will not click from this view too often.. so i’m going to be looking at a screen full of green most of the times.

Why not just get rid of it for now?

Yes you are right. It is a bug.

Also there needs to be a “mark as read” for each message, or for the whole screen, that would mark a message and all its comments as read. Otherwise i have a screen full of green in every single project, and i have already read all the message. I don’t want to have to go and click on each one, one at a time to get them marked correctly.

One more comment. Those green message bubble graphics to the left of each message in list view. I dont’ really like them, i think they are kinda distracting.

The ones here in this very message board on the main page are better. Maybe you can use these?

Also do they turn grey when you have read all the messages? Right now i just see all green, and from using this message board I kinda expect them to go grey when i have read everything and green when there is a new comment or message or something. If they don’t that would be great to add that functionality.

This is great. Easier to get to the message you are looking for. I have an idea that you can take or not.

But what if you used some ajax to let me expand and collapse the each message individually. The it should start off in list view, and then i can click each message to expand the message below it, or collapse it. Maybe something the same with “show comments” for each one.

Topic: Feature Requests / Improve the Overview

I agree as well. Maybe we could choose between the current fast overview and the slow customized. Just some kinda warning for us saying “if you customize it will be slower” .. and we’d just have to be ok with it being slower. Of course if it’s so slow that it would effect everyone elses performance then that might be an issue.

Of course maybe you could just cache all the possibile options that we could choose from, and the just display what we want to see, even thought the entire set of options is always cached.

Topic: Feature Requests / appending custom css

apparently you can do that with your overview page annoucment. But that only works for the overview page, and it’s a per project thing too.

SO i do agree it would be nice to give us a custom css box that woudl be put into the header of every single page. Would be great for us advanced users to change things. WE’d understand that if we break something by using it, it’s not 37s responsibilyt to help us.

Also i think this would be pretty simple for 37s to implement.
