Topic: Miscellaneous / Dashboard / Overview

Has anybody noticed the dashboard is now like the overview page? No chiclets, just big color blocks and reorganization of stuff? I can’t believe they changed the dashboard after the hysteria over the overview page. Is there already a thread about this or has it been deleted? It’s like everyone disappeared or something.

Topic: System Announcements / NEW FEATURE: Interface design refresh

I did take a minute to look at the blog, though no word of it was given here, and it just says “We updated the look. balbhalbh,” with NO mention of why the overview page looks like hell, or really what was behind it all. It was a general post about the new look of basecamp. I’m glad someone else came back to this thread and posted, because last time I posted, I was told by admin that Jason was ill, though actively posting in other areas of the forum. Strange that he’s so ill as to miss appointments (and I do believe that he was not feeling well) and tasks had to be assigned to other admins, yet they also could not post here about the overview page, like it’s some big mystery as to why it was changed and why we can’t have it back (cough stall tactic).

Well, it’s still a mystery, and what I make of the whole situation is that anyone who chooses to use basecamp will live in limbo, from one sudden change to another, with no more than a “try it, you’ll get used to it” explanation for permanent unwanted screen changes that cause disorder and confusion, as though it were some insignificant photo album software instead of a serious tool we use to manage our projects, hence be efficient at work, hence make money and therefore continue to survive on the planet. I don’t like people messing with my work, or my money. I personally don’t care to have things changed for the worse with no explanation and not even a slight consideration of putting it back. I think some people might barely notice the changes, because they’re not really using basecamp frequently, but, as I’ve said before, I can’t imagine what this overview modification was like for people with dozens of projects. To do that to someone without even so much as a warning is so inconsiderate I don’t have the words for it, but let’s just say it can’t possibly be good for business in the long run.

Since things aren’t going to change, use basecamp at your own risk, and try to find a Plan B in the meantime. I bet the first sign of a decent, affordable project-management software/service wins half of current basecamp users over. Then they’ll really know for sure what percentage of us are unhappy.

Topic: System Announcements / Some adjustments to the Overview screen

I had no idea. I was out of town and come back this morning to see we’re still arguing about the overview page. Some are arguing about how to argue even (statistics and ratios). Maybe he should take his time getting back here :)

“Are you serious? How many times does it need to be posted by Jason that he’s writing a full blog post about the reasons for this tomorrow?”

Well- where’s the post?

But look- Most of the people here are one-post wonders! That means that instead of working, they decided to register and make their first post about the bad overview page, because they felt so strongly about it. These are the 0.1% of the customer base maybe, but these are also the people using the product and giving comments on it. Have the other 99.9% of the customers even looked? Do they even use this stuff? Or have maybe one project they haven’t viewed in weeks. (Last login 22 days ago)>>>>> I hope this isn’t basecamp’s final overview page, leaving us stuck with it because we are ONLY 0.1% in their eyes. wake up, because i’m about ready to be 0% of your customer base.

take it a step further:

<style>table.events tr.event td.what span.verb_and_noun span.file, table.events tr.event td.what span.verb_and_noun span.comment, table.events tr.event td.what span.verb_and_noun span.todo, table.events tr.event td.what span.verb_and_noun span.post {background-color:#edf3fe;color:#898989;} </style>

add more for your ‘writeboards’ and all that, if necessary.

i think some fixes that are sure to please would be:

1. bring back the little icons (chiclets) and perhaps revert the Overview page a little toward the old layout. 2. give admins control over the colors of all components, such as late milestones, private posts, light blue header bar, etc. 3. bring back the formatting tips.

i would personally be very happy with this, and could overlook a slight visual change that i might not agree with.

we have people here who are embarrassed, losing time, feeling disorganized, dealing with extremely unhappy clients and/or having their company leave basecamp (or not subscribe at all), so i think it’s more than a “hey guys just be nice and get used to it” type of situation. feedback is just that – honest opinions, sometimes rather blunt. every designer knows not to get too attached to his work, as it’s highly unlikely to remain unchanged once the client gets a view. a sudden and unsavory change that affects organization in a project management software is going to bring about feelings of mild discontent for some to total chaos for others, and that’s just the way it is. i think it will all work out in the end, though.

the next day or two should give enough time to iron things out and allow the team to get a more organized and functional look together.

Topic: System Announcements / NEW FEATURE: Interface design refresh

I can see a few new features added, none of which required any change in format.

really do NOT care for the new buttons. the previous text link was sufficient. it was placed well enough to find easily when i needed it, but my eye wasn’t drawn to it constantly. i don’t need a big green ”+” to show me where to click for a new list, project, file, etc. there are no other silver ovals anywhere, or green for that matter!

speaking of colors, what’s up with the light blue and how do i get rid of it? completely useless for our color scheme.

the overview page is hideous. why the big color chunks when the rest of the site uses the tiny ovals to designate File, To-Do, Message, etc.? if it doesn’t change, we might have to dump this software and get something else. i’ll never view that page again until it changes, and it used to be the most-viewed page for me, as well as others, as i can see here.

honestly, WHEN is the base href going to be “_blank” ? i’m so sick of clicking on a screenshot only to close it and lose my entire project list! i mean, everyone since 1999 has made offsite links open in a new window. my project window needs to remain open, regardless of what other stuff i click on or view during the day.

also, it would be very nice if i could cross off tasks (for those who ignore the idea) and choose who it was completed by. if the designer finishes 5 things, i don’t want them to say “completed by Tempest” because I didn’t do them! need to be able to manage this.

would also like to edit comments. would also like to control what time things are completed. the only way to edit something is to uncheck it, then when you edit and re-check it, it becomes completed as of “right now.” this is useless when trying to really keep track of when and how things are being done. need to be able to have full control over all this.

i would have mentioned these things in the survey, had the link not been removed so quickly.
