True. It’s really useful when you know something is due next Tuesday but you don’t remember what the date is.

Topic: System Announcements / NEW FEATURE: "List view" for messages

Actually, the whole thing is really about views. Almost all PIM and Project Management software hold almost identical data in the database. Its a matter of how it can be viewed and manipulated that make a difference. I am very glad that 37Signals is enhancing the views that are available.

It seems that Wordpress has found a way to build the code for WYSIWYG in Safari before the new Safari ships.

# We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.

http://wordpress.org/development/2007/05/wordpress-22/

Maybe there is a way to get a head start on Safari WYSIWYG development.

Topic: Feature Requests / Stop creating new features !? - Basecamp is completed !

I think that one of the reasons why some people say it’s done, and some say it needs more features is because they are different types of users. Certain features are not needed for some audiences, while are vital to others. For example, a project manager would want more features than perhaps an employee who must login to check off things he is assigned to do. Or a company that uses subcontractors a lot will want slightly different features and permissions than someone who uses it just for client access.

It’s a hard thing to balance functionality with keeping it simple.

One possible solution is to make targeted versions on Basecamp, where certain features appear automatically for them, but not for other users who would not need such features, and any Basecamp Admin can go into their Settings and turn on and off features they need or don’t need.

The reason 37S has been successful is because the apps are intuitive, easy to use … NOT because they “do less than the competition”. There are plenty of web apps that do less than the 37S suite of apps that aren’t enjoying similar success.

I have to agree. I think that the “Do Less Than The Competition” may be a statement of fact, but is not necessarily a benefit. The benefit is that Basecamp has been kept simple and easy to use. Thinking that “doing less than the competition” is a benefit will lead to people duplicating Basecamp and adding the features Basecamp refuses to add.

Topic: Miscellaneous / Shot Down: Data Cannot Reside Outside Firewall

Well, I was trying to get one company I work with to use Basecamp. Shot down by President of company. He said that oil companies are more paranoid about their data than the government. He loves the functionality, but Basecamp would have to reside on their servers, for security reasons, if they were to use it. :(

Even if you use &gt; and &lt; instead of > and < ?

I think <code></code> should automaticlly convert < to &lt;

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Which account lets me use my own ftp-server?

:/ This would have been an feature that one of the companies I work with would have liked, especially since they frequently deal with files in the GB range. Seismic plots are HUGE.

I agree with Melvin. I’d like to see a way to make some commissions on referring you customers.

Topic: Feature Requests / Integration with Highrise

I agree. 37signals has mentioned they are working on integration, but they seem to want to make it hush hush for now, at least the details of what they are doing, which I can understand from a competitive perspective.

Topic: Feature Requests / Sunday-to-Saturday calendar

And some people in the U.S. use the Monday thru Sunday layout as well. I prefer it since it puts Sat & Sun together.

It would be nice if Sat & Sun are shaded a different color, then it is obvious which days are Mon thru Fri.

Also, having an option to chose (like most online calendars seem to have) would be nice.

Topic: Tips & Tricks / Help button - can clients see?

We don’t say “Basecamp” or show the Basecamp logo to your clients. The help section is full of references to Basecamp, therefore we don’t show it to your clients.

Perhaps the help section should be rewritten to be generic. Or a generic version be created for users. Or a macro added in there that substitutes “Basecamp” with the name of the Basecamp site (as defined by the Basecamp Site Owner).

But Admins can create new projects, right? No one has answered that for me yet.

Topic: Feature Requests / Time Management - Scheduling To-Dos

I could see why the dates on tasks were left out (based on their philosophy), however it does not work for everyone.

It would be nice if the person who was assigned the to-do could schedule the to-do, instead of the person assigning it. Doing it that way would prevent people micromanaging other people, yet allow people to manage their own time.

Topic: Feature Requests / Milestone Calendar

Please have Sat & Sun a medium grey so I don’t confuse it for the week days. I know lots of people work the weekends but I don’t like to do that. And I often end up setting the wrong date for the milestones.

I agree. This makes it easier, especially when you have people from different countries logging in where some people may have Monday and some people may have Sunday as the first day of the week. It makes Monday thru Friday stand out and be more obvious.

Topic: Feature Requests / Reporting on ToDo's

So, this is where integration between some of 37SIgnals’ other properties would come in handy. I agree that there should be an easy way for people who look and see specifically what they have to do, and also have access to the project and see what everyone else is doing as well.

Topic: Feature Requests / GUI Text Formatting

No problem. I understand you can’t promise a timeframe.

I deal with a wide variety of clientèle. Here’s an idea of their potential views about an RTE.

  • The Linux people I deal with like wiki format and Firefox (and can’t understand why anyone would use an RTE and IE; they also think everyone should just learn wiki formatting and the command line interface (CLI))
  • The Windows people I deal with like RTE and many of them never even heard of “wiki” much less know wiki markup.
  • The Web Developers I deal with like HTML or BBCode or RTE, and usually prefer an RTE where they can show the code and tweak it directly if necessary.
  • The Management I deal with likes RTE and generally falls into the Windows category above, except it should be noted that they also control the purse strings and what solutions are implemented.

So not everyone is going to want RTE, although a lot of people would prefer RTE. I would suggest allowing people to turn off the RTE for the techy folks or people who access the site through Konqueror on LInux (for example).
