Topic: Feature Requests / To-Do lists vs Highrise Tasks...

Although due dates for to-dos would be a good thing IMO, I could agree with having milestones as the dated item and to-dos undated if I weren’t forced to put a “list” between the two.
“Lists” to me represent a completely different dimension (like, e.g., the resources used for accomplishing the milestone, but they can also be used for a completely different milestone as well). I’d rather use tags for to-dos, and attach to-dos directly to (dated) milestones.
That’s what has driven me out of my paid Basecamp account, and I would be glad to see it repaired.

Topic: Campfire / Free Forum (not Chat) Solution Like Campfire?

Hi,

while I’m not sure it’s adequate to ask this here (sorry if it is not), I’d like to ask for some advice for finding a forum (not chat) solution that is comparable to what Campfire is for chats.

I need a hosted forum, preferrably free, for a very small group (4 or 5 people) that is as easy to use as Campfire. The main difference, and the reason why Campfire doesn’t fit, is that the communication won’t be real-time. One could use Campfire for forum-style communication, but it obviously wasn’t built for that.

I also have a Basecamp account, but that doesn’t meet my needs either, because it’s not a project I’m thinking of, so the whole project management overhead would be in the way.

TIA
Alex

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Forum Software

... wanted to edit the above post, but “Edit post” doesn’t seem to work, either. However, I was partially wrong wrt formatting. When adding a reply, it does indicate formatting. But not when posting a new topic.

Edit: “Edit post” not working seems to be an issue with some browsers (IE, Opera). Works with Safari, Camino, (probably) Firefox.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Forum Software

Unlike some other members here, I think that this new forum software (here and in the Highrise forum) is inferior to the old one (the one used for Backpack and, in the past, for Basecamp).

The dumbed-down Search doesn’t even work correctly (try, e.g. to search for “new Basecamp Forum”, and it will find nothing, not even the complete Thread “The new Basecamp Forum” http://forum.basecamphq.com/forums/1/topics/1). Looks like it doesn’t search the subject line. And if it only does phrase search, like stated in the thread I mentioned, that’s completely counter-intuitive. If it finds nothing (= most of the time), it doesn’t say so, but hangs on a “Searching for” page.

Finding my own monitored topics is a pain. It puzzled me that it can’t be found on the home page when logged in (like before) or on one’s settings page, and after I found out that I have to search for myself as a user and then display monitored topics, I noticed that it displays all posts, not only threads and it seems to me that everyone can see what anyone else is monitoring (this even looks like a violation of privacy).

Not to mention that there’s no preview for posts and no indication how to put any formatting on parts of your posts.

Topic: System Announcements / New Feature: SSL logins for everyone

I’m late to the party, but being someone who requested exactly this feature, I want to thank you for the addition.

Topic: Feature Requests / SSL login

I wondered why SSL wasn’t a feature for all paid plans until I found a reasonable answer by JF in a thread (on another topic) in the old forum. The additional server load may justify restricing SSL connections to higher-priced plans in general.

But couldn’t all logins be SSL-encrypted? This doesn’t seem like too much overhead, and would at least protect the login/password data.

Topic: Feature Requests / Pls make ToDos more user-friendly

I’m not sure I need due dates.

But it would add much needed flexibility if you could assign todos directly to milestones, disregarding which list (if any) they’re in. That way you could make
  • milestones = subprojects + their to-dos
  • todo lists = context (or category or whatever)

I don’t really see the point of having to first put a todo into a list to add it to a milestone.
