As I usually just so up here to complain, I’d like to simply say “Nice job” Jason & team. Well done.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Avatar Icons in messages.

Would love to disable the avatars. Should be a setting. I’d wager it’s a small % of all Basecamp users who have uploaded icons. We work with a number of fairly serious clients, and the last thing I need is a freelancer or third-party technical contractor uploading a chimp photo, a Hello Kitty animated gif, or an image of questionable taste (which all have occurred). Please allow this to be disabled in master account settings. Should be easy.

Topic: Feature Requests / Posting comments to a message by replying

No support of (and no error message about) attachments definitely a problem. I can understand it’s a burly technical issue given the different manner that file uploads are actually handled, but it’s a lot to expect that average users are going to remember/comprehend that these special Basecamp emails which magically post to the project thread can’t support attachments. At the very least the sender needs to get an error message that says something like:

“Replies to messages via email do NOT support attachments. Please log-in to the project thread to post a comment with an attachment or to upload a file. Love, 37S Basecamp mail police.”

Topic: Feature Requests / Lastest Project Updates Footer in Comment email

It’s not useful for us. I think perhaps should only go to administrators, definitely not to regular clients.

Topic: Feature Requests / Email "LATEST PRODUCT UPDATES" not wanted

Also, How can I turn off the people icons? If we don’t use photos, we equally don’t want the icons.

Ditto on the icons—would love to turn these off as the just take up space for us. Distracting and unhelpful if (like most customers I’d imagine, and like most users of this board) people don’t upload icon images.

Thanks Sarah, was just about to post on this as well, nice to see you’re on it. UPDATE: 12/17—realize there are other priorities, but would just like to make sure this one gets taken care of.

Topic: Feature Requests / Private Comments in Public Threads

I’m guessing this one has been noted before as well—but it would be great for those granted PRIVATE status rights to be able to make private comments in a public thread, like [PRIVATE] “Jim, where are we with this client request!?” Awkward to have to manage private discussion on a client-initiated thread in a completely separate thread.

They bug and would make the app look like a forum on High School Musical? ;-)

Topic: Feature Requests / Categories United (Messages & Files)

Please pardon if this has been posted before (but there are 38 pages of requests).

Would be awesome if the “category” function that tags messages and files was a united pool so that if I added a category in messages it appeared in files and vice versa. Big plus to this? You can attach files in messages (our studio’s preferred method) but then you can later sort them by category in files. Now if you attach a file via a message or comment you cannot give it a category from the files section and the categories from messages are not carried over to files.

Nothing’s easy, but this seems like a pretty simple future upgrade feature, that I’d LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see.

Thanks guys.

Topic: Feature Requests / Admin Status & Time Tracking

Hmm, I set up a test user to try this and doesn’t work—wierd. The non-admin can just see time but can’t do anything.

Topic: Feature Requests / Admin Status & Time Tracking

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like the Time Tracking feature offers only two states: 1) Admins can do anything, add time, adjust previous entries, edit anyone’s hours at any time, etc., and 2) Non-Admins can do nothing except view times already entered by someone else—they cannot even enter their own time, even if they’re part of the owner company.

Seems like it would be really useful to have a third state, where people who are non-admins with private status can at least enter their own time. Would be great if this were ‘editable’ for 15 minutes or something, but then locked so non-Admins can’t go back and enter times on past days or edit previously entered hours.

Am I just blindly missing this function? (Previously everyone at my firm was an admin but thinking of changing that, but I need people to be able to enter their own time).

Thanks for the efforts 37S—makes the feature a lot more useful. edit: What’s up with the blue, no-icon items? Is that on purpose (is it bad that I have to ask?)

Topic: Feature Requests / Forum View = Lock & Close Message Threads?

As demonstrated by the Admins of this Forum, sometimes it’s time to lock and close a particular thread. As we come close to wrapping a particularly complex project that still has multiple threads going it would be great to have this functionality in the Messages section—specifically, the ability (for an Admin) to “close” a message thread and lock it. Then I could easily direct all comments into 1 or 2 new Messages tallying final project content notes and punchlist items.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / New Overview Bug

Along the way a few small things may go wrong here and there. That’s just being realistic. That’s the cost of using something that is alive and changing and adjusting and reshaping itself as it grows in real-time. We can’t promise you things won’t break in the future when we release something new. We can promise you that we’ll take reasonable precautions to prevent breakage, but we can’t promise perfection.

Fully understood. I only post here because I think the ‘living-breathing-ness’ of the software is only fortified by a forum such as this and unvarnished feedback when appropriate. And extra thanks for the quick fix.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / New Overview Bug

I definitely appreciate the team’s attentiveness and responsiveness.

I understand and of course appreciate that making software products = making bugs. What usually happens in a product like Word tho, is that a new upgrade with new features can be either buggy in general or buggy in the new features. It’s pretty rare in the in-box software world that a new release breaks a pre-existing feature that was working solidly in the earlier versions. With in-box software you also have the option to not upgrade, when your needs are being met by the software as is, or when your business is in the middle of a critical time-sensitive project where any software instability would be a threat to project success. With a web-based app, there’s no safety cushion there, and there’s no option to not upgrade.

Topic: Feature Requests / Attach message to Todos and Files

We do it the old fashioned way—if you want to link a To-Do to a message, put some HTML in it. You can say see this post and link to the message in the to-do, easy. We do it all the time.

Topic: Feature Requests / Love the new dashboard layout, can we have it in Overview too?

Moving away from graphical assets towards a more pure text/CSS framework makes more user-control over color schemes make a lot of sense. Even a broader array of pre-sets that affected more elements (like the task flags) would be a great step. Pretty simple technically.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / New Overview Bug

Bryan, not trying to show attitude at all—I’m just a businessman managing a large, distributed, time-sensitive project that people are working on right now with a beta launch date of tomorrow afternoon. We’re assigning critical to-do’s to a project team distributed across 8 time-zones and I really just need BC application features to be stable and reliable.

To-Do’s that were posted by one person, but assigned to another, now show (only in Overview—not on Dashboard or To-Do screens) as assigned to the person who posted them (not the person they’re assigned to). Would be great to get this fixed ASAP (and not have to feel like I need to bug-hunt every time a refresh is rolled live). ;)

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Email Notifications Not Being Sent

Still happening. Lots of activity on our Basecamp last night. Only 1 notification sent. Strange. No firewall or spam-filter issues. Happening for multiple users in different locations. Definitely a system issue.
