Topic: Feature Requests / Milestone calendar should show project name

Huh?

I don't use ical feed. I'm talking about the calendar I see when I click on the "Milestones" tab from the Dashboard.

Topic: Feature Requests / Milestone calendar should show project name

I believe this has been requested before. I have the same feelings on the necessity for showing the project name on the milestone calendar as I do in regards to showing the project name in the subject of the emails that get generated as a result of posting a message.

Unless the project name is manually included in the milestone, it’s impossible to look at the milestone calendar and know what project the milestone is referring to. Basecamp should automatically display the project name along with the milestone.

Overall, my impression of Basecamp after a few years of extensive use managing about a hundred projects at any one time with 9 employees is that it works well for a very small company with a very limited number of projects and project activity. Beyond that, it becomes very unwieldy because of its limitations. It’s impossible to track and find messages once they’re a few days old. Comments to messages are even harder to find without any way to filter messages by date. Now with messages attached to to-dos, messages are even more difficult to track.

Topic: Feature Requests / Email Notification Improvement?

Brian,

Your suggestion for the email notifications of messages to contain the project name in the subject line is requested on these boards on an almost weekly basis. It’s such a simple enhancement. I’m not sure why it’s fallen on deaf ears with 37 signals for so long.

I can’t think of a single downside to including the project name in the subject line. There are only upswings.

Topic: Feature Requests / Comments on Milestones Sucks

This goes back to my topic relating to the entire messaging system needing a complete overhaul:

http://forum.37signals.com/basecamp/forums/3/topics/9616

It’s impossible to not get lost in the BC messaging system. In my opinion, it is precisely because the messaging system is way too simplistic.

Topic: Feature Requests / Project Name in email communications

Yes—it works well when people remember to do that. When you have 10 team members and 15 clients accessing Basecamp, and even when we ask them to include the project name in the message subject, the chances of them doing it: zero percent. I always remember. My team members and clients do not.

This is such an easy thing to implement, and it would really go a long way. There’s no need for a workaround whereby everyone has to be reminded to format a message subject in a certain way. That’s a hack, and as mentioned, it’s unreliable.

Topic: Feature Requests / Project Name in email communications

I have begged—literally begged for this exact request numerous times over the past 3 years. It would be a simple thing for 37 signals to implement. I see zero downside to implementing this. It boggles my mind that it has not been implemented thus far.

Topic: Feature Requests / Basecamp Messaging: Complete overhaul needed

Hi All,

I have been using Bascamp for about 3 years and currently manage about 100 active projects.

I have found the messaging system, in general, to be the weakest part of Basecamp.

It’s very easy to lose track of message threads especially when comments have been added to the original message. There is no way to sort recent comments to messages, and there is no way to flag a message or comment for follow-up (or to make it easier to find at some later date).

Also, with the ability to also post messages as comments to milestones, and to-do’s, this just compounds the disorganized mess the messaging system is.

This is one area that 37 signals has not improved at all over the years, and I’m seriously considering dropping use of Basecamp because of this archaic messaging system. To be quite frank—the entire messaging area needs a complete overhaul.

I’m curious how others have handled the challenges the messaging system presents.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Messages not received sporadically via email

For the past two days, I have sporadically not received basecamp messages assigned to me in my email. We have had no other problems with our email during this time.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / How to receive email confirmations for your own messages/comments?

I think stevieP has a good point, and there is definitely merit to receiving copies of your own messages.

Basecamp has an inherintly weak messaging system. It’s completely impossible to follow-up on a message once it’s been posted for a period of time. For example, I post a message to colleague Joe Smith on a Friday. He never answers the post. I have 100 projects on Basecamp from which I post numerous messages each day to a number of colleagues. A few days later, I remember I posted a message to someone, and he never responded, but I don’t remember who it was. How can one find such a message in this case? Also, once comments start getting posted to a message—forget about it. Those are easy to lose as well.

Basecamp really does need a much more robust messaging system. Simple stuff would go a long way. For example:

  • A button to “See my recent posts” with the ability to filter by date range. This would show messages and comments that I have posted during the given period. Maybe also with the option to filter those messages that have or do not have comments posted to them. This will allow me to filter messages that I have posted that I may be waiting for a response on.
  • A button to “See recent posts to me” with the ability to filter by date range. This would show me messages that people have posted to me during the given period

Lacking some messaging functionality like the above, stevieP is on to something when he suggests a way to get copies of your own messages. It is then easier to filter and manipulate and search for these messages in local Outlook than it is on Basecamp.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Milestone link doesn't bring up specific milestone

This kills me.

On the “Dashboard” view, we see the calendar of the milestones due in the next 14 days. Why, when I click on a SPECIFIC milestone inside that calendar, does it just take me to the general “Miletones” page where ALL of my milestones are listed. Am I crazy, or should it be an anchor link that takes me to the specific milestone on that page? It’s a burden because I have projects with dozens of upcoming milestones. Often, I review the upcoming milestone in the calendar view and then I want to modify a specific milestone. Instead, it takes me to the page with dozens of milestones that I then have to search through and find the one I originally clicked on.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Basecamp Problems

Hi,

I have been experiencing quite a nubmer of problems with Basecamp for the past few days. I know it’s not a local issue here. I can access other sites-no problem. Basecamp however, hangs when I click on tabs (I’m not just trying once-I’m trying many times). Sometimes, when I click on a tab or a project, it just times out. Firefox responds back with, “The connection has timed out. The server at whatever.projectpath.com is taking too long to respond.” Again—I am able to access other sites, and this is not just happening infrequently. It’s happening a lot. In another window, as that connection is timing out, I am able to access and peruse other sites. I have tried on numerous browsers. I also tried on my new Mac Mini and experienced the same server response problems.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Basecamp is down

It’s working now.

I don’t think I was having a problem on my end. I was able to visit other sites. All I was trying to do was to bring up Basecamp by clicking on the same “Favorites” link I always do. I wasn’t trying to perform a specific function in Basecamp. Was just trying to bring it up.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Improper formatting when posting replies via email

When we use email to reply to a Basecamp message, the message gets posted in Basecamp in one paragraph. In the email, if I separate paragraphs with a line space, Basecamp ignores this when the email gets posted. This makes long messages very difficult to read.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Posting images via email doesn't work

Been trying since it was announced that images can be posted via email. Just replying to a message as a comment via email and attaching a single image. Each time, without fail, the image shows up in Basecamp as “SOrry this image appears to be corrupt”.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Unable to post comments via e-mail

Having the same problem here. Getting this message:

We’re sorry, but we couldn’t post your reply to the project.

WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
There are two main possibilities:

1. The project no longer exists. Someone may have
completed it or deleted it. You may want to check
   with the project administrator.
2. You don't have permission to post comments to
this project. If you think this is a mistake you
should check with the project administrator.

Note that the project does indeed exist. We’ve been getting this error whenever we try to post a comment via email for all of our projects. It seems that despite this message, the comment does actually post to Basecamp. We’ve never received this error before.

Topic: How are you using Basecamp? / Introducing Tiki - A Simple Task and Bug Tracker

Has anyone had any luck with Tiki? I requested a beta code nearly a week ago without any reply from the folks at Tiki. Also, in perusing their own forum, it was filled with people begging them to get back to them with a beta code. Seems people are practically begging them to be their customers with no response from Tiki. Doesn’t leave a good first impression.

Beyond Tiki, has anyone found another bug tracker that integrates with Basecamp (not just allowing a one-time migration to Basecamp—but I’m talking about actively integrates and synchs with Basecamp).

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Archives projects list shows out of alphabetical order

This is odd. Has always been this way, but now with so many projects, it’s getting annoying. My archived project list shows in alphabetical order for the most part. Parts of it are not in that order? Why?

Topic: Feature Requests / Where can I see recent message activity?

Hi,

I understand I can go into each project and view the recent message activity. But, from the Dashboard view, how does this work? At what point does Basecamp bump a message from the Dashboard view? I posted a lot of messages across many different projects this weekend. By today, many of the messages were no longer shown on the dashboard view even though they were not yet accessed by my employees. As it happened, many of my employees had email problems this weekend, and since they rely on receiving the Basecamp messages in their email, I am afraid that since they didn’t receive the email, they will not be able to easily review messages I posted across many different projects.

It seems Basecamp should have a function to display messages and replies posted between a certain date range. It’s very, very easy to lose a message in Basecamp especially when there is a long list of replies. As the project manager for about 100 different projects, having more robust message reporting functionality would certainly come in handy.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / New Basecamp emails - correct behavior?

-----
best of both worlds gets my vote: (a) FROM to be the individual posting; (b) Subject to be prefixed by Project name not the company name.
-----

I’ve requested this feature many times (as have many others over the years). I’ve not yet heard any response from 37 Signals on this request.

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Downloading images

It seems to be a problem only in IE. If you click on the thumbnail representation of the image that is embedded in a Basecamp message, it brings up the larger image. If you try and right click to download that, it only allows it to be saved as .bmp. I tested in Firefox, and right click does allow it to be saved in the native format (.jpg). So, should I chalk it up to a Microsoft IE glitch?

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Downloading images

Hi All,

What’s the secret to downloading an image in its native format for images attached to a message? For example, if one attaches a .jpg image to a message, if you later try to download or save the image from the message, it ends up saving in .bmp format. If you click on the thumbnail image in the message, it opens a new browser window, and if you attempt to save from there, it’s a generic .bmp format. Does one need to right click on the image from the “Files” tab?
