My comment was to say I disagree with the idea of 37signals making decisions on how the development process should work. Their job is to make the tool as flexible as possible and let us, the users, decide what features we want to use.

although you can use 1 team = 1 Basecamp person = 1 distribution / group email address, there are situations (like my current company) where IT doesn’t allow the creation of distribution lists

One issue that comes up again and again is the difference between To-Do items and Messages. People in our organization are forced to mix the two up – an issue starts as a to-do item, then people create a related message (because To-Do item doesn’t offer formatting nor file uploads), which however cannot be assigned to anyone… it all gets confusing and frustrating pretty soon

Now that I’ve been using BC for a while, I really don’t see why we need to differentiate between the two. Can we not just have “notes” or something, each with the possibility to be assigned to one or more users (or not) and be associated to a deadline (or not), each with WYSIWYG text formatting, and file upload facilities, and each with a tickbox next to it?

Even better than a tickbox would be a pulldown menu with a series of “note” statuses. These could be defined on a project by project basis, with a default template as a starting point. I am thinking of statuses such as ‘assigned’, ‘understood’, ‘more info required’, ‘ready for testing’, ‘signed off’, that sort of thing.

Not only we use the formatting all the time, we find it wrong that it is missing from To-Do items!

I don’t understand why to-do list items are not formatted the same as messages or this message board. What bothers me is the line breaks. Surely it’d take no time to fix if somebody from 37signals actually read this forum.

And email alerts when to-do items are ticked off or edited

Had the same problem ourselves; but it can get more complex. What if you want to share info with C but not SC? There’d be too many permutations (Private, You + SubContractors, You + Clients, Public)

Maybe we need categories for companies, with SubContractor and Client as initial ones and the ability to create new ones. Then for every message / milestone one can select Public / Private / Custom. The latter would show a row of tickboxes or something.

Topic: Feature Requests / Watch to-do lists

Apologies if this was posted already.

It would be great if one could ‘watch’ to-do list items, just like posts in this forum. That way, I would know when they are being done and don’t need to keep on refreshing the page to find out.

The way I’d implement it: a checkbox next to the to-do list name will set the default for the whole list; individual checkboxes next to each item would override the individual item.

There are so many feature requests, it is quite overwhelming!

It would be nice if we could rank them and sort them by rank, that way the most popular ones would be at the top of the list and there’d be no repetitions.
