Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / # shows up as bullet Well, I found that the ”>” suggested on Basecamps quick reference FAQ wasn’t listed on Textile’s quick reference FAQ, they suggested using “p(.” for an indent. That wasn’t lining up well, so instead I chose to do:
That works and looks okay. It also maintains the numbering scheme if I follow the indented bullet with another #. I still have the first problem where if I do this:
What I get is:
I looked on Textile’s page for an example of a mixed list and I’m guessing it’s simply not supported. Does anyone know of a plugin or add-on for Basecamp that gives you some nice text formatting options? |

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / # shows up as bullet Adding a line of text between the numbered portion of the list and the indents didn’t fix the indents. I can’t get the indents to work using the ”>” character. Do messages not support all the textile features? |

Topic: Miscellaneous / Off Topic - Need Opinions Well… I personally pay about $65 a year to have someone host my space and web address. That’s the extent of the charge. I use a free FTP client to handle file transfers called FTPSurfer. I use Wordpress (totally free) to run a very nice looking blog on this website. I had a message forum that I used to run that was PHPBB2 (totally free), but I took it down because of spam bots and my own ignorance in being able to implement anti-spam bot measures. I’m thinking about using the free version of basecamp as a message forum. I prefer to have things on my own hosted server under my own paid terms, so I’m a little leary of going this route. Once I paid for the webhosting and address, my provider’s FAQ section was really helpful in getting things set up. I am not a IT guy or web guru (functionally web-tarded), and I’ve got a really slick looking site that I did all the work on. Wordpress is immensely easy to set up, use and administrate. I strongly recommend it. |

Topic: Feature Requests / User Defined Tabs I am not a fan of the “blog” style Messages tab. I know a lot of people are, but I like things clearly categorized and organized. For instance, my current project includes several users within my own company and 2 – 6 people from 18 different locations from one customer. We provide machine controls for a specific type of steel forming equipment. In this case, we’ve retro-fitted our controls to existing equipment for this company in each of their 18 locations. We also provide production planning/reporting software that connects the machinery to their existing ERP system. You might imagine that the hurdles in getting everyone up to speed are immense. I’m dealing with a range of folks who might have a high school education up to people with several engineering degrees. Each location has some level of customizability to make the system work best for that particular location. In order to help everyone in the project understand some of the very tricky concepts between what is our responsibility and their own IT people’s respsonsibility, I’ve created FAQs regarding settings in files that change how parts of the system work. Currently, I’m using the writeboards to track issues and resolutions for each location. There is a write board dedicated to each location and to the company in general. It seemed FAQs fit better as messages. As a FAQ was created regarding a currently hot issue, I could e-mail it to the group as it was completed, or e-mail changes to FAQs when they get updated. Now, I have other messages that I use for other purposes. The fact that they’re all mixed together feels messy. I understand that a user could click the Messages tab, then click the link to the FAQs category, but it’d be super slick to give the users a FAQs tab that is accessed from the Overview when they log in. I can personally imagine a great deal of things I’d like to seperate out by tabs. It’d be great if I could create my own tabs, assign different types of content to each tab (like a write board, some messages, to-do’s) and order the tabs how I like. Even delete the default tabs for a particular project. |

Topic: Feature Requests / Links Tab I just read the post regardin links and security, but I figured I’d post this anyway. I’d like to be able to create a links sidebar or tab where I can centraly locate lists of useful/important links for my project users. I’d prefer not to make someone navigate to a writeboard or message that was created for that purpose. Also, maybe we could hash out that “security issue” thing. If I understood what the specific concern was, that’d be a big help. Thanks! |

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / # shows up as bullet Okay, as a test, I inserted a line of text between the bulleted list items and the numbered list items and the numbers worked properly. The indentions still failed below the numbered list, however. I didn’t try inserting a line of text between those and the numbered list. Certainly that’s not how it’s supposed to work. I read through the textile page and looked at the examples. I noticed that in their examples they didn’t include any mixed lists. Maybe it simply doesn’t support them? I hope that’s not the case. We’re a consulting/engineering company that supports a large customer base. Ease of use and readability are key when communicating complex technical information to lay-people. Formatting is crucial for clear communication. My current Basecamp project is being used to wrangle a big company with 18 locations into line with their corporate objectives. |

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / Images in Messages: Why Is This SO HARD? I’m curious on this, too. I was about to post and ask for a “Links” tab. I don’t want to post a message, writeboard, etc. with my links. I’d like to have a sidebar or tab dedicated to links that I can put up for my customers. cagdas brings up a great point about security. What’s the threat if the only people who can access the project are users who must log in? In general, what’s the security threat? If I were to post a link to my intranet site, even basecamp users couldn’t click it and access the site without VPN access and username/password for our internal server. |

Topic: How are you using Basecamp? / What do you folks use to visually collablorate online? I don’t know if it’s Mac compatible, but you should check out WebEX, it’s what we use to support our “less-than-PC-literate” customers. It uses port 80, so firewalls don’t create a problem. Your contractors would have to wait through a couple minutes of quick download and setup, but then you can:

Topic: Troubleshooting and Bug Reports / # shows up as bullet I posted a message yesterday where I used a bulleted list, and wanted to follow it with a numbered list:
What I got was:
”>” non-indented text preceded by an actual arrow… ”>” non-indented text preceded by an actual arrow… |
