Change Campfire Domain Name

Avatar Randal Burgess 5 posts

We current have our “free” campfire account listed under a domain name (parentcompany.campfirenow.com) and we’d like to upgrade the account to a pay-plan and change the domain (servicename.campfirenow.com).

Do I just need to kill the current account, start a new one, and then upgrade or can I get the name changed now and then upgrade the same account?

And just to add/ask…is there a possible way to have a subdomain point to campfire for the same purpose (such as campfirenow.companyname.com)?

I don’t think you can change your domain name, Randal. Might have to start over with the new name.

You could do the domain cloaking thing to redirect your campfirenow.companyname.com domain to the campfire URL, but you’d need to set that up with your host.

Well, i can make a CName record in my DNS that points to the company.campfirenow.com domain name for our chat room, but I get this message when the redirect occurs:

There’s no Campfire at this address
You may have mistyped the address or visited an account that doesn’t exist anymore.

If you started the URL with “www” please try it without the “www”.

Apparently, 37s looks at the http header for routing purposes. So, you can’t do this only with DNS. What you need to do for a custom URL is to run some sort of http service at the destination IP of your custom DNS record that returns an actual http redirect to the “real” URL. If you don’t want to run your own service, some DNS providers offer this service.

What you’re describing above with the CNAME isn’t a redirect, its just an alias. The browser needs to be told to make a new request to the new URL so it will send the correct http header.

Might be a bit late for Randal, but for future Googlers, you can change the URL of your site by going to Dashboard -> Account Upgrade/Billing, and then clicking the “change URL” link near the top of your account details.

Enjoy!
