Best Web Hosting?

Avatar trafik33 1 post

Sorry if this post is out of line on this forum, but I’m having trouble finding a good host for our websites. We have been using Dreamhost and are not pleased. Site stats say about 3.5gb per day on bandwidth usage. Our site is in php.

I like the thinking around these parts and was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions for a well featured, reliable, easy to use host.

Thanks!

Hmmm, is this related to Basecamp?

Oh, well I guess it is misc…

I like Rails Machine for hosting.

I do the hosting of my client’s sites using Lunarpages www.lunarpages.com. they are out of Los Angles. I’ve used them for 3+ years and am an overall satisfied customer of theirs. Their services scale up from basic shared hosting to reseller hosting to VPS to dedicated hosting. Their hosting environment is pretty stable and screwed down.

Hope this helps

I was thrilled with the grid server from Media Temple. Pretty impressive for only $20/month.

I concur re: MediaTemple. Rails runs pretty fast too, for a shared-host setup.

However – if you want quick and dirty hosting that supports everything under the sun, it’s hard to go past Dreamhost. Just wouldn’t want to run anything too critical on there. They’ve had some, um, issues recently.

Yeah, the key part of that is quick and dirty. My brother uses and recommends (don’t know why) Dreamhost, and he’s had much downtime. Support just laughs at him, or posts lighthearted blog posts about why they don’t care about downtime.

Media Temple, on the other hand, has decent support. The phone support is the best route to go, because a real person who knows what he’s doing answers the phone quickly. The web-based support is a little slower.

I don’t know about the support thing – while I agree the uptime has been less than stellar (you get what you pay for), the (email-based) support has always been friendly and helpful. Much more so than MediaTemple – in fact, that’s my biggest gripe with (mt).

The Dreamhost blog is definitely jovial, but they have never once implied they don’t care. I think this is a fairly common misconception based on their non-standard writing style.

This thread was OT already right? ;)

Yeah, this thread was way OT from the get-go. My brother sent me copies of the responses he got from Dreamhost about their problems. The do not indicate a company I would want to go with.

Media Temple does have slow online support. Not sure why. But they also have a phone number, unlike any other webhost I’ve tried, that reaches a friendly, live person in no more than 3 minutes, 24/7.
