When your OpenID server is down, you're locked out

Inevitably this had to happen. I use TypeKey as my OpenID server and their server is down this morning.
Hence, I’m locked out of my Basecamp accounts with no possibility to switch back to the ID/password login.

Could we have the possibility to either:

  • switch back to ID/password from the login panel (it’s there in the UI but it doesn’t work)
  • choose a secondary OpenID server

I feel like I slammed the door of my home with the keys inside.
And of course it’s saturday morning and I have a hot milestone for monday.

:-(

Ok, I found a workaround that might help others in the same situation.

Luckily I delegated my OpenID login to my own domain so all I had to do is signup to a new OpenID server and change the delegation to get access to my Basecamp accounts again.

To set up server delegation, i.e. use your own URL as OpenID, here are a few tutorials:
http://www.openidenabled.com/openid/use-your-own-url-as-an-openid
http://simonwillison.net/2006/Dec/19/openid/

I recommend that you do this if you never want to be locked out of your Basecamp accounts. By using server delegation you can change OpenID servers at any time. You also have one sleek URL to login everywhere.

Hope this helps.

Yep, those are two of the great benefits of the OpenID system. If your provider goes down, you just change delegation and are on your way.
