Text sizes in Messages
|
|
There is another thread going on about text size differences, but I had an issue with one in particular. In the Messages view (click on the Messages tab, see the long list of Messages) the text size is like this:
But when you click on a Message, you’ll see the text size larger, like this:
It would be nice if the text size remained consistent. It doesn’t make any sense for the resize and it throws the eye off. Thoughts? |

Wow. Great find, Andrew. I just found the same thing on my system (FF 2.0, Windows XP), and once I saw it, I remember noting the difference ages ago, but never thought much about it due to just getting the info I needed. I’m wondering if there was a design reason behind it. |

Thanks. I should’ve mentioned I am using Firefox for Mac. Though it does the same thing in Safari. I’m pretty sure it’s an intentional CSS setting. But I don’t like it much. It’s distracting to reorient my eyes to the same content…but larger. |

This is definitely intentional. It was brought up on the old boards and JF said it was a decision they made to make things easier to read. Two threads about it, one of which you started Andrew (not sure if you remembered), and the second with comments from Jason: http://basecamphq.com/forum-archive/viewtopic.php?id=3300 http://basecamphq.com/forum-archive/viewtopic.php?id=3082 |

Huh. I had forgotten that. While I am not in the camp of “it’s an easy fix” or “you should let us control the font size”, I do feel it’s an odd design decision for a website. So, I’ll leave it at that. If anyone else has opinions, I invite you to air them. If not, I’ll learn to deal. |

I noticed this pretty quick and have read the previous posts on it. Jason said back in December:Quote:
As I said in my original post it’s an experiment. And as I said above, we’re open to change after some time has passed. This change was based partially on customer feedback so it was customer driven. We’re not doing this to make you miserable, I assure you.
The change stays in place for now and for a while so we can gauge longer term feedback. Gathering feedback over a longer time horizon than two days is an important part of making the right decision. Just like to say that I prefer 12px just in case you are looking at it again (as if you haven’t got enough on the go with the UI update!). Richard |

That’s weird: Basecode does not format the quote the same as in Basecamp! |

I find the inconsistency in text sizing throughout a message very disjointing. My workaround is to use “Command -” to change the overall font size on the page, which helps it look a little less horsey. Unfortunately, this is a less-than-impressive feature of Basecamp and is surprising to read that it is intentional. It really impacts our decision to invite clients into a project (as it doesn’t look very professional)... and from a PR standpoint, is unfortunate for 37signals, since we could be helping spread the word about their otherwise fantastic product. |
