Better file management

Love Basecamp, but the file storage is becoming a bear. I am having to dig through old projects deleting files one at a time to clear up space. We need some way to mass purge, drag and drop delete, and a way to search all files across the system. When we start approaching a file storage limit its just tedious to go through 5 pages of 200KB files clicking delete, “ok”, delete, “ok”, delete, “ok”, “delete”, ok, .......

I totally agree. We have over 200 projects, and 4 or 5 are archived each week.

I definitely would love the ability to connect to a file folder via ftp and mass download files, or delete files, etc…

A ZIP > DOWNLOAD > ARCHIVE may be a good option. To keep 37’s interest of having people upgrade due to lack of space, it might be well to have all files zipped and archived on the project (user initiated). May put a crazy load on things but it may help people out to download all files. We’re lucky to have opted to use our own FTP server when we started using Basecamp and still use this feature. I was surprised to see that this was removed for other users.

I would agree with the above – we use Share File and like it and just reviewing Base Camp – we have our clients access Share File and it works well – I can see the advantages of using Base Camp – but unless we can upload entire File Folders – that would leave us to using Share File and Base Camp – and that wouldn’t make sense. We don’t do ‘Projects’ like everyone else – we have Accounts – or more like Account Management – and hence we have an entire Account under a Project and have sub folders – To Do’s, etc under that Project. I like the file structure and ease of use though…

Given that Basecamp uses Amazon File management and if you look at amazon simple file management there are a number of GUI file managers for Amazon, maybe a GUI file manager could be made available to Basecamp. Now that Office Live from Microsoft has moved into beta, there is going to be more competition in this area. As tg22 says, it would be silly to have 2 systems so maybe 37S can surprise us again this year with something really useful (like email replies) :)

It would be nice to be able to move files into categories much more quickly. I’ve noticed that the drag/drop in a few areas of basecamp is laggy, so I wouldn’t suggest that route, but maybe allowing us to quickly see 50 files at a time along with checkboxes, then at the top or bottom have a “with selected [select box of possible actions]” that we can use to move/delete big chunks of files at a time.
