Support for Microsoft Office 2007 Filetypes
|
|
We’re running into a lot of problems when we post Office 2007 files. Can you update your recognized filetypes to support .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, etc? |
|
|
You mean they just don’t get the cool icons? Is that waht “lot of problems” refers to? |

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread. It would be nice to have the “cool” icons for Office 2007 files. If the icons are useful for .doc files, then they’re useful for .docx files. It could be that the problems BenZ refers to are linked with mime-types. .doc files are serverd as application/ms-word, whereas .docx files are served as application/octet |

Does anyone know if the new office 2007 file types are supported in bascamp now? Tried to link it our ftp server and upload a .docx. The file wouldn’t download correctly. I believe it is the issue Barnes is referring to. Thanks |

Did anyone find out when Basecamp will recognize Office 2007 file types? Every time I try to download an Office 2007 file, Basecamp doesn’t recognize the file type and prompts me to save it to my computer, where I then need to open it as an extra step. It’s a pain and is confusing some of my un-tech-savvy users (e.g., I can’t access some word files, but can access others. why?). Any timeline for resolving this? |

We’re working on this and expect to have a solution shortly. Sorry for the delay. |

As a follow-up to Jason’s comment, we’ve just about got the changes in place that will cause DOCX files to use the same icon as DOC files. However, the bigger issue (“Basecamp doesn’t recognize the file type and prompts me to save it to my computer”) is trickier. Basecamp doesn’t do anything special to serve DOC files with any particular mime type. If you are hosting the files on your own FTP server, then you’ll need to tweak the mime-types yourself, on that server. If you are using Basecamp hosting, and DOC files are opening on your computer automatically, but DOCX files are not, it may be that you have something configured in your browser or OS to make this happen. We’re considering ways in which we can serve files with the correct mime type (currently everything is application/octet-stream, with a few exceptions), but it is not as simple as just configuring our web server with the right mime types. |

Any update on having basecamp recognize .docx extensions, etc. This is a big problem with our clients who are all switching over the the latest edition of office. Anytime they upload a docx or other file, the file cannot be downloaded or accessed in any way. Any and all help is appreciated! |

I’m sorry you feel our explanation wasn’t appropriate or helpful. The ........................................................................................................................ Dear Sarah, Once again thank you for your prompt reply. Quote: “you’ve specifically said that these files download incorrectly as a different file type”. I have re-read my e-mails and don’t agree, with you on any of these issues. The files are not downloading as a different file type as you thought I was saying….this is not what is happening… .docx remain docx files If a client/staff uploads a .doc file I cannot upload it…I just get a blank screen. If, however the client attaches the same file to an I quote from a post on the forum” Any update on having basecamp recognize .docx extensions, etc. This is a big problem with our clients who are all switching over the the latest edition of office. Anytime they upload a docx or other file, the file cannot be downloaded or accessed in any way. Any and all help is appreciated!” This was posted in May 08, This is the same problem I have. I have the same question that this poster had, Any update on having basecamp recognize .docx extensions? what is the solution offered? Your explanation: it may be that you have something configured in your browser or OS (as was mentioned in the forum Jan 08 and therefore I already know this) However you are the experts, this is why I come to you for a solution? This is why I pay $100 a month. Precisely what do I need to do on my operating system or browser? You are running out of time…. I will search for basecamp alternatives….. |

I am curious if the issue you are having dealt with selecting files from the BC page and having them open directly – but they open up as empty docs? I had a similar issue back a month or so (using Office 2008 for Mac and Office 2007 on XP). I found that right-clicking the link and using Save Link As to download the doc and then open solved the problem. I did not ever check to see if it had anything to do with DOC vs. DOCX. |

bryandocx… You probably have looked into this, but I hope you have opened doc files from other sites through your browser to rule out a real browser issue. I know my browser has settings as to what applications I will use to open various file types. It’s possible you may have “docx” but not ‘docx; doc’. Just trying to be helpful. |
