Global Milestones iCal File

Avatar wardo 2 posts

It would be nice to have the ability to subscribe to one global iCal file for all my company’s project milestones. Thank you for the consideration.

+1

I’d also like to see milestones by client, across all their active projects.

Check the bottom of your Dashboard and you’ll see something new.

Hot damn.

You guys are amazing. Thanks so much—something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.

Our pleasure. Glad you like it.

Oh, that is a beautiful thing. iCal lets me filter events by client code, so I get my ‘All milestones by client (across project, in date order) request at the same time. Thanks!

Don’t laugh – what’s iCal? Is it some Mac thing or can us Windows lot get access top one? If so, how?

Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar

It is implemented/supported by a large number of products, including Backpack Calendar, 30 Boxes, Apple’s iCal application, Darwin Calendar Server, Contactizer and iPod. Buni Meldware Communication Suite, Chandler, Drupal with its event module, Citadel, Facebook, FirstClass, Google Calendar, Horde, Jalios JCMS, KOrganizer, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Entourage, Microsoft Exchange, Mozilla Calendar (including Mozilla Sunbird), Mulberry, Novell Evolution, Novell GroupWise, Nuvvo, Simple Groupware, Sun Java Calendar Server, Upcoming.org, Windows Calendar, Webical, Zimbra Collaboration Suite, and, in its latest version of the software, Microsoft Outlook (see below). Notably missing from this list is the Palm Desktop and Palm (PDA). Blackberry, Internet edition, does not recognize iCalendar, although in concert with the Blackberry Server, iCalendar invites can be sent and received.

Also see:
http://www.backpackit.com/example_movies/icalshare.mov

That video shows you how you can subscribe to an iCalendar file (including your Basecamp global iCalendar) from within the Backpack calendar.

That’ll teach me to be lazy and not look for myself!

Pushing my luck a bit – I have a Google calender – is it like subscribing to RSS feed or is there more to it?

...and replace the word “public” with “Basecamp”.

Thank you so much Jason. This will make a huge difference; being able to see the status of projects from one feed.

Anyone know how long it takes for Google Calendar to update an iCal feed? I only ask because it doesn’t seem to be showing me anything, but that could be due to a problem on my end. If you know, give me a shout. Thank you.

This is truly great guys. Is it also possible to subscribe to projects by ‘company/client’? For me, the only problem with the Global is it is hard to see which items are for which client.

Simple and great. Love it.

Now can you do something about my increased anxiety of being responsible for all those bloody milestones?

Liquor. Lots of it.

Glenn Davies, if you code your milestones by client (e.g., AUT07-001 Milestone name), you can filter the view in your Calendar app to show you all the projects for a client. (So filtering for “AUT07” shows me all the AutoSoft projects we’re working on.)

I’m doing this right now with iCal, works great.

Benj – I don’t know the hard and fast answer to your question about the update time on the Google calendar feed but I’ve seen mine take up to three hours. One of them from this weekend didn’t show up until this morning. It’s very strange.

Avatar Jason Fried Administrator 1120 posts

You may want to ask the folks at Google about this. I suspect the answer may be in an FAQ at Google as well somewhere.

Cindy, thank you for the response. I found another thread on here… ages old that mentioned that Google has “issues” with external calendars. Sometimes, it takes deleting & adding several times for it to show up. And it might have coincided with a time frame as well. But Jason is probably right that it’s a quirky thing with Google Calendar. sigh

At least they’re better than MS Outlook. :D
