Organizing Projects on the Dashboard

Avatar JoeC 2 posts

New user to Basecamp. We are quickly seeing that the list of projects on the dashboard will become quite large. We are a media production company and I would like to organize our projects into a few general categories (i.e. Commercials, TV programming, Corporate Video, Internal). Any suggestions on organizing your project list on the dashboard – other than by company (client) name?

You can prefix your project names to indicate the category. I also make sure that I don’t include everyone on every project. As the account owner, you will see every project. But you can assign specific users to a project. I’ve got about 20 projects, which it tough for me. But some folks in our area will only see two or three when they log in.

There’s this workaround in the Project faqs, I use it myself and finds that it works well.

Can I create sub-projects in Basecamp (i.e. a project within another project)?
At this time, it’s not possible to create sub-projects in Basecamp. But there’s a friendly workaround that will allow this functionality: Create a new company and make it the “primary company” for the various projects you’d like to group together. Here’s how this works: (check out http://www.basecamphq.com/help/projects/#create_sub-projects_workaround for the walkthrough).

Thanks for the advice. Kitty…the workaround is perfect. The primary company setting for each project allows us to categorize projects and add client companies without putting different company client users under the “category” companies. Excellent!!
