Track billable and non billable work?

Avatar halldorr 1 post

I searched through the site and couldn’t find the answer so am posting it here and apologize if it’s the wrong area. We are currently using a custom solution that allows us to assign tasks and track hours on projects but it also allows us to track billable versus non billable hours. I couldn’t find that in Basecamp and was wondering if that was out there.

Not all tasks we do are billable for a client but some are. Does Basecamp do this?

Two ways to accomplish this in Basecamp:

1. Add a To Do List with an Item that is called “Non-Billable” or whatever. Track your time to that Item.

or

2. Prefix your Time notes with something like “NB: ” so you can see identify it as being non-billable.

This doesn’t really work, as time still gets added to the Projects Total Time, and this total is the time that gets charged out (mainly because non-billable times in large jobs are overlooked in large lists).
Also, as an owner of a web design company I need to track time for my employees to ensure there is no time being wasted – plus I also need to know if excess time is being offset against a project (ie client asking for a lot of extras).

There seems to be a real need for 2 simple (but powerful) things in BaseCamp.
1) – Enter time from a Too Do list and tick it as ‘non-billable time’
2) – Times shown in the Projects Time Page needs to be seperated into Billable and Non-Billable sections.

This would mean that my employees times are corrrect for the week.
I can track which jobs have an excess amount of non-billable time against them and find out why (through notes on each too do list) and make informed decisions on weather I should charge extra (good to know for quoting future similar jobs also).

This seems relatively simple, and adds a huge amount of functionality to BaseCamp – hope someone can help with this, as we love the program ;)
