Different project permissions

I am interested in moving from our existing FTP server to Basecamp.

With FTP I will create a root folder and then several sub folders for each project. Our staff has access to all files and folders. Consultants and clients have access to their respective sub folder. Can I mimic this with Basecamp?

Basecamp storage isn’t like FTP—you can’t get to it using an FTP client. You can only access it through the files tab, where people will only have access to files in projects that they are part of.

I was thinking that was the case. So there’s no way to limit some content to specific users?

You limit content to specific users the same way you limit a message or to-do item to a specific user. By putting it into a certain project where only certain users have access, and making it private if necessary. If you mark a file as private, the only people who see it are people who you’ve given access to private data and who are part of whatever project you uploaded the file in.

This may be just what I am looking for. I see where you mark a file as private but where do you specify which people can see this private file? And can I do that on a per project basis?

By default, each person in your company can see private items. To give another company private access do it in the “people” tab. Be VERY careful doing this—a company with private item access can see all private items in every project they have access to.
