If you would like us to add an SMS provider to Backpack for SMS reminders, please reply to this thread. We need the following information about the SMS provider in order to add them to Backpack:

  • Their name.
  • The country they offer service in.
  • The email address that they accept SMS messages at.

For example:

Thanks!

Reluctant to post this here but the other thread is closed. Orange UK don’t understand the concept of emailing SMS messages. Does anyone here use them and, if so, have you found a way to make it work?

"This doesn’t work I’ve tried it. Vodaphone UK don’t seem to support this service from what I’ve read."

Can anyone else confirm this? If the Vodaphone UK service doesn’t work, I’d like to remove it to avoid confusion. Thanks.

I have logged a support request with Vodafone UK about this their response is
“Dear Sir / Madam,
Thank you for your patience, we are still working to resolve your query.
We have identified your problem but have had to escalate it to a specialist team.”

So it may be a case of watch this space (or more likely not) – Vodafone UK would be great if it’s possible.

It looks like the proximus (Belgium) address is incorrect, even though it works if you log in and send from their site. Thanks for the effort.

I just had this set up for me by my corporate sales team at O2 (Uk) – dunno if it’s O2 UK’s default system (I couldn’t find one) – but IT DOES WORK! – I think you need to ask O2 to set it up for you… (in my case I had to send a txt with the subject “on” to 212)

Provider: O2
Country: United Kingdom
format: number@mmail.co.uk

For those of us whose mobile phone providers aren’t up to SMS/Email translation, would it be possible to add a section to the Settings of our backpack account to allow us to configure an external supplier to do it? there are quite a few companies who offer this as a free service some are listed here (I can’t vouch for their reliability as I haven’t used them!)

O2 (UK) has been added and will be available after the next Backpack deploy, currently scheduled for tonight at 9pm Central.

Regarding Proximus, it does indeed not work.

However, there is a workaround vie e-mail reminders:
You can register for a yourname@proximus.be e-mail address, via the vodafone live portal which you can configure to send you an sms notification of every new message (7.5 eurocents/sms).

@richallum: I’ve got reminders from Backpack being sent to my UK Orange phone. I needed to go into the web interface to email on orange.co.uk and switch on email alerts (and also whitelist the backpackit.com address so the vast quantities of spam the numerical address attracts don’t get through!)

Kirsty -

I’ve go that sorted but all I get in my SMS message is:

Email Alert
From: alert@backpackit.com
Subject:.
To listen to email call 123
From: 5859
21:30 7-Aug-07

I was hoping that the reminder text would be in the subject field – what do you get?

Hello,

I’m requesting Cincinnati Bell Wireless in Cincinnati, Ohio. From the Cincinnati Bell website, it looks like they also partner with AT&T, but I can’t get reminders when I set my provider to AT&T. Here’s the info:

Name: Cincinnati Bell Wireless
Country: United States
E-mail: phonenumber@gocbw.com

T-Mobile Austria and Cincinnati Bell Wireless have been added and will be available the next time Backpack is deployed, probably within the next few days.

AT&T and SprintPCS are both already supported.

This may or may not be the appropriate place to post, but while I know that Rogers (Canada) has been on the “works” list for some time, there is a significant hangup. As compared to Google Calendar, for example, where SMS messages come straight through to me, with Backpack, I always have to explicitly reply and tell Rogers to let the Backpack message through. Clearly, there’s a difference in implementation between how Google and 37signals are working this.

Have any other Rogers customers seen this behavior?

Hi,

Can you add SMS gateway for Orange in Poland?

XXXXXXXXX@orange.pl

You can create this alias using “Multibox”. XXXXXXXXX is 9-digits phone number /without country code/.

Avatar liron 1 post

E Plus
Germany
xxxxxxxxxxx@smsmail.eplus.de (11 digit phone number, no country code, full area code – eplus have a few area codes)

Avatar bogen 1 post

Support for E Plus would be awesome, indeed! Thanks in advance!

I’d like BT Mobile in the UK, please. Unfortunately I can’t get them to tell me the email gateway, or even acknowledge that such a thing exists…

Avatar Mark Imbriaco Administrator 104 posts

Orange (Poland) and E Plus (Germany) have been added to the list and will be available the next time Backpack is deployed.
