Thanks for everyone’s feedback on the design refresh so far.

We’ve pushed an update that makes it easier to follow the new Overview screen.

The NEW version
You’ll see the color bars are now left aligned and text doesn’t wrap under the name:

The old version
The left margin of the color bars was wavy depending on the length of someone’s name. The text also wrapped under the person’s name.

Subtle change but we think it helps. We hope you like the revised design. Thanks again for your feedback, we do appreciate it.

It is better than the old version… but have you given thought to just having the text be a different color with no background? to “added a to-do” would be in orange font with no background color.

ditto – the boxes are a bit overwhelming for me. Either way, I love the new updates to the system – thanks!!

I agree. There’s a little more vertical alignment now, but the colored “action” pieces are way too strong visually and, for me, there’s still not a strong enough sense of alignment for easy scanning.

It doesn’t make it much better. I think the key problem here is that data in not in a column. If you could simply put the data in columns, it woudl look so much better. It just looks a bit odd as the data is not in a nice neat columns. I realize your attitude is mostly a “we decided this is good, so be it”, but I think in this case, where you have pretty much your entire customer base not liking it, why can’t you simply go back to the old look, columns with little icons, with the addition of the date.

I realize it would involve a bit of swallowing your pride and admiting that you did here was wrong, but trust, we’d all love basecamp that much better if we knew the people behind it could admit when they made a mistake. This is clearly a mistake.

the “added a message” etc rectangles are still way to big. even on my tiny laptop’s screen

Also if you note on this post http://forum.basecamphq.com/forums/1/topics/406 you showed us a before and after screen shots. The overview looked fine there. Why did you suddenly change it? It looks nothing like your “new” screen shot. Your “new” screen shot is much better. I think you have learned another lesson here. If you want to post screen shots and get our feedback, that’s great. But don’t do it unless you actually plan to use those screen shots. If you make changes, post some more screen shots before you go live. Would have been much better as we’d have all worked out the dislike of the overview and you’d have changed it back before going live with it.

Dan, I’m not sure I want I want them to go back completely to the old method of things… but just don’t make the colored boxes so strong that they distract from everything else and make it hard to read.

Avatar Melvin Ram 318 posts

Actually, if they just replaced the colored text boxes with the old icons and kept the new format, I’d be happy.

for me, i would say the current “colored-box with white text” is just nice and very straight forward to identify and differentiate them.

but what about putting the data in columns?

Avatar Melvin Ram 318 posts

I didn’t really care about putting the data in columns. Maybe I’m just weird?

@danjfoley

Were there an Overview screenshot on this post http://forum.basecamphq.com/forums/1/topics/406 ?

I have to say, I still don’t like it. It just feels all over the place.

I don’t want the fact that something is a comment (for example) shouted at me… I just want to know what the comment is about.

Also, while I think that left-aligning the “posted a comment” blocks (for example, again) is an improvement, it still looks nasty that they’re different lengths, so the “meat” of each line (what the comment is, what the file uploaded was) starts in a different place on each line, and is really hard to scan down the list.

i like this very much.

thanks.

Here Here! We’re a shop of 12 creatives and this screen is the only one we all dislike with a passion. Thanks for aligning the text, but please consider toning down the colors, until then I’ll be avoiding the Overview section ALL TOGETHER.

We dislke it very much as well. It feels very disjointed from the rest of basecamp and it feels extremely loud – maybe if the coloured text boxes were matched to what the rest of Basecamp uses, then that would be better.

It’s an unfortunate change, in my opinion.

Avatar Melvin Ram 318 posts

Mr. Miller, that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been avoiding it for the most part.

I agree – this is the only screen that doesn’t fit in. The colored boxes are over emphasized and take up too much space. Very hard to scan information.

We disklike the boxes too! Love the second line indentation–makes things way easier to read. Huge fans of all the other changes throughout. Please kill those crazy, klunky boxes. They deserve to die.

This doesn’t help, the overview page is still a mess…my internal team and clients are all complaining about this. Everyone is confused and they are blaming us! Please help and either revert back to the old page, or push a revision – seems like most people are complaining about this page. Thanks!

Danjfoley DOESN’T speak for us all when he says “we’d all love basecamp that much better if we knew etc etc…. ”.

Thanks Jason/Basecamp for constantly looking for ways for us (and the people we work with) to have a better Basecamp experience. And for giving us the opportunity to comment on proposed changes. It is much appreciated.

I think it’s the only page that doesn’t fit. The rectangle boxes seem out of place and the colors are overwhelming and don’t fit in with the rest of the color palette. I was happy with the old version, perhaps this page just needs some additional tweaking.

oh, i’m afraid it’s still hideous. thanks for trying but this screen is completely unusable for me still. i’m with miller & ram. i just will never look there ever again.

I like it a LOT better now. My complaint with the old one was the lack of alignment making it harder to scan. Now I find it easier to scan which is really my only concern with the overview page.
