The problem affecting Rich was searches with a very large number of projects. If anyone else with lots of projects has seen errors with global searches, you’ll be back in business shortly.

Those having issues searching with international characters, the problem has been fixed! Please try the searches above and let us know if you aren’t seeing the results you expect. Thanks for your patience on this one.

We still have problems when searching across all projects and just get the error message. Have emailed support but is anyone else getting this?

vslacks, we’re reindexing our content to improve search relevance in response to the concerns raised here. Newly created content will appear in your search results shortly.

Well, now it doesn’t appear to be working again. I posted a message three hours ago with the word “Senders” in it several places, but when I search on this (initial cap or all lower case), I get no results. Doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that people can find what they’re looking for.

Richard, folks in your company can use the dropdown, but clients cannot.

tmc, please provide specific examples in an email to support and we’ll help you out.

Net Solutions, searching for individual characters isn’t going to work. Please get specific and search for one or more complete words.

vslacks, did you create a message and immediately search for it? There’s a 20 minute lag between changes you make and when they’re searchable.

Wow – I just started using Basecamp and this is one of least reliable search features I’ve ever seen. Is the search case sensitive? There was a message that had the word “sponsorship” in it several times. It was in a category called “Sponsorship”. But when I searched for “Sponsorship” nothing came up.

This may be beating a dead horse here, but I also am having a hard time using the search feature. It appears to be an issue when searching characters. I was logging into the forum to post this issue when I came across this thread.

tmc, if you send details to support with the name of your Basecamp site and the search terms you’re using but not getting results for, we’ll investigate.

I am sorry, but the new Search function just doesn’t work. I have never had so much trouble finding words that I was sure were there somewhere. Now the search doesn’t find them, but then I find them manually and they are there? What could be causing this problem?

Jeremy -

The filter function you listed is only available to the project owner. How can I make the dashboard available to all team members? We have a team that is approx 30 people, and they need to see what other specific individuals are doing/assigned. Since they cannot select on the to-do page, (which would be the world’s simplest solution) I had hoped that the search feature would enable them to select if the proper information was placed in the to-do description. It’s a work-around. But even that doesn’t work consistently – there are many tasks that have names in them and the to-dos never show up in the search,

I really don’t understand why you are resistant to making features optional and controllable by the administrator. I can understand why some project managers don’t want to enable the staff to filter to-dos, but certainly many will… why can’t this be a system feature instead of an imposibility. For me, the design decision at 37 undermines the whole concept of collaborative project management where information is to be shared and usable by everyone. In the current system I am only getting about 75% of the effectiveness of Basecamp that I really should be able to get.

Thanks for listening. Just a bit frustrated since my clients are struggling with this simple limitation.

I really appreciate the new global search feature!

But there’s a problem here as well:
It doesn’t find words containing the german character “ß” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9F) – is there a way to include those country-specific characters in your engine?

Thanks a lot!

I assume you expect ’$’ to find posts with dollar figures like $1000 in them?

Exactly, although not as many projects contain $1000 invoice items as I may like! =) But yes, that’s how I used it. We would search for ”$” so that we made sure all of our quotes were reflected in the invoice. It worked perfectly for this, but now it doesn’t an invoicing time is much harder!

Thanks again!

I’ve discovered another search problem… If I search for the term “home” it returns some messages with the word home in the message title, but doesn’t find others. Something about the new search functionality is not quite fine-tuned. My guess is that this is happening to others, they just aren’t aware of it yet.

What was once an excellent search engine that worked extremly well in english and arabic is broken for now ever since the new search features have been implimented.

We are running basecamp in a combination of english and arabic and we never experience any search problems before.

is there any info about what changes took place to the search feature? Do you expect to address that issue soon?

Much love to the basecamp crew

Same problem here with french accents. Any word containing an accented characters is excluded from the results.

I’m receiving feedback from several users that since the new search features have been implemented they are receiving much fewer results compared with previous search engine results. For example, previously when a message titled “Garage Drawing” was posted and included a file named “dwg 123”, if you searched for “garage” the results would include the message and the file. The current search engine does not capture the file. Thus, the other search engine provided better results for our needs.

With that said, thanks for the great app. We have been using it for a couple years now, and it has been easily adapted by our end-users. Cheers.

Jeff, please contact support so we can troubleshoot the particulars.

Richard, that is correct. I tried this out and it wasn’t a good fit for most searches, more often producing irrelevant results than not. However, you can already filter to-dos by responsible party on the project and dashboard to-do pages.

the search feature doesn’t seem to search on the person assigned in the to-do? So if I search on someone’s name, I find every occurrence where they are noted in a to-do, but not the to-dos they are assigned.

When I search a term like ‘acknowledgement’ under a specific project, I get the accurate results. When I switch to global search w the same exact term, those results are not included.

In other words, the global search is not finding items that the specific project search does find.

We’re working to improve search relevance and will test for this case.

Thanks for the kind words!

Topic: New search feature

Hi there. I love the idea of the new and improved search feature, but it doesn’t seem to be working nearly as well for me. Searches that came up with many results before the upgrade aren’t coming up with ANYTHING now. For example, I do a search at the end of each web design project for ”$”, so that I can make sure that the invoice is updated. The search worked beautifully for that. Now, if I search for ”$” or even ”$*”, nothing comes up. Has the ability to search for characters been removed?

Thanks so much! I love Basecamp and wouldn’t be able to run my business without it. =)
