Topic: My First Public Page

There is a link to it from my blog but mostly it was intended for fellow participants to be able to track my progress in one place. There is a bit of a community that forms around this event and we try to encourage and support each other – I thought it would make things easier. I announced the page in the forums for the event.

I appreciate your comments – and thanks for the subscription. I really enjoy the blogging, it is a great writing exercise and I get to share some of the stuff that I enjoy with others.

I have had a bit of exposure from this post as well which is nice. The blog isn’t monetized at all so traffic doesn’t mean much other than just finding like minded folks. I’ve met some interesting folks

Topic: My First Public Page

I have never really used Backpack for anything other than my own organization but I just this month made my first page public. I thought it would be an ideal way to share my progress for National Blog Posting Month. The goal is to post to my blog at least one post per day for the month of November.

Backpack is ideal really – I can easily log daily updates with topics and links.

So far it seems to be working out really well. I’m already thinking about other things I can share.

I’ve checked that box also a few times… without any action.
What is it supposed to do ? Email all the comments ?

Ditto on that. I don’t think it’s ever worked for me.

Topic: Backpackit Page linking

Yeah, you can add a link into a note by entering either:

"My link description":http://www.mywebsite.com/

OR:

<a href="http://www.mywebsite.com/">My link description</a>

HOWEVER if you are linking to another page in your Backpack account, which is shared publicly, you need to decide whether to link to the public version of your page, or the private one (ie., the one you see when logged in to your Backpack account), (or both), as the public version has a different address to a private one:

eg.,

"Check out my favourite music on my Backpack page":http://shehaal.backpackit.com/page/287274
"Check out my favourite music on my Backpack page":http://shehaal.backpackit.com/pub/287274

Which would appear as follows on your Backpack page:

Check out my favourite music on my Backpack page
Check out my favourite music on my Backpack page

The first is the private one, which I would have in a page so I can easily navigate around when I’m viewing the page and are logged into my account. The second one links to the public version of the same page. Note the different addresses. I wish the 37signals crew would see how bloody confusing this is for visitors to one’s various publicly published Backpack pages and fix it. This was all done automatically with the Links feature in the old version. :(

Can anyone suggest a work around for this? How does one put a URL in the body of the page?

This needs to be fixed. The loss of links is significant.

LINKS

Please.

Glad I didn’t go deleting my existing links willy-nilly before noticing they aren’t part of the “Add” bar at the top of the page.

gimme back my links . . . html isn’t going to cut it . . . easy linkage between shared private pages was really, really, wickedly easy and helpful. get real.

@jberman:

I agree, manually creating HTML links to pages in notes etc isn’t as visually or technically simple. It requires the Backpack customer to know about HTML and URLs – which is something they shouldn’t have to worry about. Linking pages together should be a quick and easy step, but is now a lot more complex and time consuming. I hope 37s are reading all the feedback about this ex-feature and bring it back. It seems pretty obvious to me that lots of people used it and want to see it reinstated.

yeah, but tags don’t fill the gap when you need to link/associate two publicly shared pages. See my post in the feature requests forum for more about it.

Nope, they removed this feature in the new version of Backpack. Tags sort of fill this void – you can tag pages as the same thing and then click the tag at the top to see links to all of those tagged pages.

Topic: Backpackit Page linking

After the backpackit update I have been unable to link pages to one another.

Is this still possible?
