Well, how do you?

It would be interesting to know how you use Backpack as I am sure I could get more from it. We have Basecamp (company), Highrise (company & personal) and Backpack (personal). I tend to use Backpack as a ‘notebook’ but find it crosses over with Highrise and to a lesser degree Basecamp. Look forward to hearing from you. |

I use it for work (non-people related tasks and notes [for people items I use Highrise]); personal task lists; home remodeling project organization; shopping lists; and calendar. I’ve come to really orient my day around it; it’s replaceable, but not by any one system. What a great upgrade this is! |

I’m a college professor. I work on my laptop, home desktop, work desktop, and various library computers at different times, so a web-based solution is a great help. As I do my research / writing over the summer, I often have ideas, come across things, etc. that I might want to use in teaching, but which I don’t have the time to really look into now. I set up a page called Fall 2007 teaching, where I jot down anything related to my fall courses, and another called Future teaching, for stuff that’s further down the line. Up until the upgrade, everything was in Future teaching, but the ability to easily move stuff from one page to another let me set up the Fall 2007 page easily. I also keep a collection of links related to each course on delicious, so the 1st item on the backpack pages is a link to my delicious items tagged with that course topic. I’m starting to see the payoff of this system as I switch from my own research and writing to preparing my fall courses—I haven’t been actively working on them, but between backpack and delicious, all of the stuff I need is ready to go. |

I am a web designer, and own a small design firm. To manage my client projects, I tried using Basecamp. I quickly realized that the tabs and clicking-needs were a bit much for my small projects. So I use Backpack to create ‘Project Pages’, to store contact info, notes, files, images, and lists for each project. Also, use it for any other reference pages as needed, to store technical specs or helpful URLs. I (heart) it!! |

Since the last post I split my Fall 2007 page into separate pages for each course, & have been using each as a to-do list, as a notepad for teaching ideas, and as a repository for my lesson plans. I’ve also started adding notes with each lesson plan after the class, so I have my ideas available for the next time I teach the course. And I’ve been setting reminders re: reserve readings, picking up videos from the library to show in class, etc. I’ve never had a term go so smoothly before. |

I am a recruiter and I use a separate page for each of my clients. I used to keep each client on a separate Writeboard, but that was sort of a hack. With the new search feature I have my client info readily at hand and can set up “to do” lists for each client and track the latest activity there. It’s especially useful for tracking major contacts at each company I work with, even though I use HighriseHQ as a CRM. HighriseHQ is nice and is an easy archive for my e-mail correspondence, but it doesn’t let me see everybody at once. I use Notes on each page to list web sites, company news, and thoughts about next steps. I’ve just learned that you can embed Google maps with directions onto a page, so I’m really looking forward to trying that. I also use the pages to organize my personal life, too, for trip planning, Christmas gifts, and, of course, a Main Page that holds my master To Do lists. |

I am an administrative associate (read, Secretary) at a major university. I’m responsible for supporting multiple professors who have teaching, research, and clinical duties. Currently, each professor has a page and on the page is various items – to do lists for the simple stuff, notes for the more complex stuff, writeboards for the things that are going to take more than a week, or that more than one professor is working on – that way I can link one writeboard to multiple people. I’m still working out the best way to organize all the information, and setting up my procedures and systems – but the Backpack system is a great corrollary to the hardcopy system I was using just last month. Hopefully, I’ll be able to dispense with all my little file folders entirely! And the best part is that if I have a day where I have to do some work from home – no more stressing out about not having the files, between my flash drive and BackPack, everything is right at my fingertips! |

I am a ‘beginner’ in using backpack… So far I have stumbled through the various options and have generally been able to sort out how to use them. I do have one question -if one of you can help. I have not been able to figure out how to delete the “My Page” (from the right hand side). The pages that I have in ‘Blue’ I know I can delete by selecting that option from the bottom of the page. It’s the other ‘Pages’ that I can’t figure out how to delete. (Clear as mud, huh..) If anyone can figure out what I’m talking about -I’d appreciate the help. |
