I think I like Backpack more than GApps because it free-form yet has some structure with the way it uses little modules for different content types (like a to-do list, writeboard etc). I personally just preferred the way I can chuck everything onto a page rather.

I'd suggest the killer feature for you will be that you can add comments and attachment to stuff like to-dos. Normally you do this via e-mail. GApps has no easy way to discuss and share attachments that I can think of. You need to be collaborate and communicate at a central point. Although Wave looks quite good for that when it's ready.

@JMac what if you used tagging? So you just go to All pages and use your tags to find pages for Collections and Projects.

I want to create pages that display our various training videos for our employees, and have them be organizeable with details (a preview would be an added plus). Can this be done with backpackit?

EDIT: I had created a script to upload and display the videos on our own server, however the hosting company has a max filesize that has really restricted me from completing the project. I'm hoping backpackit has something I can work with to display these training videos in a simple format for employees to view them.

Backpack has been such a great tool for my administrative assistant to use -- it's the perfect fit to organize my business, especially when I'm on the road like you. I gave her full access to my email, since she schedules all appointments/meetings for me anyways (as an aside, let me know if her "administrative assistant salary":http://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/Administrative-Assistant-Salary-SRCH_KO0,24.htm should be increased to $30/hr or more). I like your GTD idea of creating Daily Priorities and Call Sheets for the next day on Backpack, so I had her implement this ingenious process. Thanks!

TJE,

With Backpack, you _could_ create a separate page for each group, make the page private, then give each group member access via the share function for each separate group (page). But this quickly gets messy when trying to separate disparate groups, each with separate access (Backpack is really superior as a unified group intranet).

Basecamp seems the better way to go, because you could create a separate project for each group (naming the project the group name or number, for instance), which would keep each group's files and info private. Regarding a calendar, the Milestones function within Basecamp would serve well as a 2-week-out calendar, or, for a more robust calendar option, you could always utilize a Google calendar within an - iframe - to display it on your Basecamp overview page (you could even display one grand calendar on all group overview pages, if the calendar was not in need of group-by-group changes or privacy, by merely embedding the same Google cal on each separate project (group) overview page.

Regarding your needs for a blog, it seems, given your requirements, you may actually be after more of a forum than a blog, where your students could share questions, answers, and ideas, and you could moderate and involve yourself in the help process as you see fit...this would definitely be a forum. For this, I would recommend a Zendesk forum, which is very clean and simple to use, and could also serve as a great FAQ page or knowledge base for your group materials, as well as a superior support ticket submission system (its main function). If you want to stay within one application, don't underestimate the simple power of the basecamp Messages tab, which, in itself, functions as a very simple and threaded discussion forum (each message --or topic-- can have an infinite number of follow-up comments).

Anyway, these are some (but certainly not your only) choices for proceeding with your needs as you've presented them here.

Good luck, and let us fellow hacks know how things turn out for you!

I am looking for something to help manage my group training classes. Each class consists of 10-15 clients from different companies and I have new classes starting each month. Each class is held monthly and continues for 10 months.

I want to give the members of each class access to the presentations, handouts, homework after each session and also access to a group calendar for their particular class group.

A blog would also be valuable to allow the members of each class to ask questions, share information, etc.

I don't want the members of one class to have access to files, presentations, etc for another class.

How effective would basecamp or backpack be at fulfilling my needs? Which one would work better?

We're a small nonprofit housing counseling agency. Our staff of four will see over 500 families facing foreclosure this year, not to mention a couple hundred who are trying to buy a home. The potential for chaos is unnerving. We recently moved to Backpack for our scheduling purposes, smoother communications, and the ability to create pages for follow up or any other type of information. I've been using Backpack for a while now, but my staff wasn't too sure about this transition. In a matter of days, they have all fallen in love with it and can't imagine life without it! THANKS BACKPACK!!

Hello,

Is anyone using Backpack with foreign language characters? What is the level of support for these in Backpack?
Is there a simple solution for sharing information with users in several different countries and languages?

thanks

Hey guys!

I'm a receptionist at an average sized hotel, and have been looking into the 37signals products a bit. I was wondering if anyone have experience with using the products as intranet at a hotel, or anyone have suggestions on how to do it.

I can see 3 different usages: Us few in the reception to communicate and collaborate between the shifts, the different departments at the hotel like kitchen/sales/management/reception/restaurant, and last between us and our sister hotels nearby.

I'm not quite sure what It would include, but what I can think of is:

*Leave messages across the different shifts/departments/hotels, and a place to write news in general.

*Write and save reports for every shift.

*Invitations to meetings/parties.

*more?

*chat

I didn't find a way to contact 37signals and ask how they recommend me setting it up, but maybe you in the forums could help me out. Especially if anyone isut no matter what business I'll gladly hear what you recommend me to do. I'm not even sure which of the 37signals product we should use, but it seems like backpack is the one. Or maybe more than 1?

We have an intranet in our (huge) hotel chain, but it's like from 1999 and useless. But because of this, we can't make 37signals our official one - it will just be to make things easier because the official intranet stinks.

Reply in thread if anything, I'm also available on E-mail on Kjetil@residence.no

Thanks.

Yep you can share Google Calender stuff in Backpack, just grab the feel url, goto add calendar and then paste in the URL. Backpack will work it's magic and go and get the dates. Think it refreshs every couple of hours, so don't panic if the updates aren't displayed immediately.

We're in a similar situation calendar wise. If you want to keep everything in one place, notes, pages, calendars etc then stick with Backpack, if you want to Sync your Calendar to other stuff like iPhones, then Apps is the way to go.

Highrise is far from a true pipeline app, but it is far better than using Backpack for this purpose. You could use the Deals function, where you could <B>tag</B> pending Deals using a familiar pipeline-naming protocol, such as
<blockquote>Prospect 10%
Confirmed Lead 25%
RFP 50%
Selected Bid 75%
Won 100%
Lost 0%

_or whatever naming / stage protocol you decide on._
</blockquote>

This would help you keep some sort of searchable (if crude) pipeline. As far as archiving "follow-up materials," simply create a company or case where you upload and store these boilerplate files and letters. Be sure to name this company or case "Follow-Up," so you can easily search/find it. It wouldn't hurt to tag this as "follow-Up" and perhaps also "productivity" and "pipeline," just to be sure you can locate it if you forget what you named the company/case. This is a jacked-up work-around, but it should do for a fairly basic pipeline within Highrise Deals.
